Chinese interpreters - Mandarin and Cantonese

When considering an English to Chinese interpreter, the form of Chinese to be used in communications depends on the target market. The two most commonly used forms are:

1. Mandarin - spoken in Mainland China, Taiwan and Singapore
2. Cantonese - used in Hong Kong and overseas

Asian Absolute selects Chinese interpreters with the appropriate combination of specialist experience and language skills for each assignment. Spoken Chinese varies to an even greater extent than the written language as there are many regional dialects. There are seven main dialects in common use in mainland China, plus scores of local variations.

An awareness of the variations in spoken Chinese is important when selecting Chinese interpreting services. A person speaking Shanghai dialect, for example, will not be understood by many Chinese interpreters who have not lived in Shanghai, and inhabitants of remote provinces such as Guangxi on the Vietnamese border speak dialects which are almost distinct languages.

In the majority of business interpreting situations either Mandarin, Cantonese or (less commonly) Shanghai dialect should be used. The distinction between Mandarin for mainland China and Mandarin for Taiwan should be considered, but is not so vital for interpreting services as it is for the written language.

All of our Chinese interpreters are fluent in English and at least one of Mandarin or Cantonese, and many also speak regional dialects. The majority of these individuals speak Chinese as their mother tongue, but we can provide native English-speakers with fluent Chinese for assignments if required. If you are unsure which kind of Chinese interpreter is most suited to your needs, we are happy to discuss your specific requirements and advise you.

Chinese is structured and spoken very differently to English: our interpreters are alert to nuances and subtleties of meaning in both languages, enabling them to convey the spirit of a conversation or speech completely. In addition, the need to understand courteous body language and correct etiquette used at social engagements are definitive aspects of successful Chinese interpreting. We provide Chinese interpreters who incorporate this into their work naturally and professionally.
