Staff Profile - Kanako Mathys, London account managerKanako began work for Asian Absolute in 2003, as one of the company's first Japanese translators. By the summer of 2005 she had been promoted to account manager A prominent member of the Asian Absolute Japanese team, Kanako brings not only several years experience as a professional translator, but also a strong background in CAT software and its use in the field of Japanese localisation. She manages a large proportion of Asian Absolute's Japanese translation work and looks after the multi-language needs of many prestigious accounts. Siemens and the Trust Companies Association of Japan are just two of the many clients who have made a point of praising her quality and client-focused approach. Kanako’s role requires an intimate knowledge of the skills and strengths of the company’s Japanese linguists, gained through daily interactions with many of the specialist translators and interpreters that the company employs. This enables her to match effectively the translators' talents with the individual needs of each project. Kanako herself is also often involved in the final QA procedures carried out on localisation projects, a function which places a very high degree of responsibility with her, but one she says she enjoys immensely. Originally from Kumamoto Prefecture on the southern island of Kyushu in Japan, Kanako studied locally for her bachelor's degree in English and Education, and got her first taste of the UK while on a sandwich year at Durham University. After working for a number of years as a technical translator and overseas sales officer for Japanese industrial corporations in Kumamoto and Hiroshima, she returned to the UK to complete a masters degree in Applied Translation Studies at Leeds University. It was here that the foundations for Kanako’s future were laid: she began working for Asian Absolute as a freelance translator, and also met her husband. Although Kanako says she never expected to find herself in London, she has built a life which she loves. She says the excitement of living in the capital lies in being able to meet interesting and diverse people from around the world, a plus which extends to her work life.
