While over 100 different languages are spoken in Burma, most people speak the official dialect Myanmar. Our translators provide expert Myanmar translations both into and out of English. In addition, dialects such as Shan, Karen and Mon are spoken by a large number of Burmese, but feature less frequently in official affairs. These represent ethnic groups, a number of whom consider themselves to be in opposition to the central administration on the basis of historical disputes. While Burmese bears some resemblance to other South East Asian languages, its distinct development began over a thousand years ago and it is unique. The writing system - Myanmar script - grew and derived from an Indian script and there are over 33 characters which correspond to astronomical beliefs. The set of rounded characters remains from a time when straight lines would have torn the palm leaves that the script was written on. Nowadays, handling of the distinctive characters can still be a tricky business if you do not have the appropriate fonts and software.
