"Bahasa Indonesia" is the commonly used name for the language - a modified form of Malay - coined by Indonesian nationalists to symbolise the dialect spoken by the majority of people living in Jakarta. As it was not associated with any particular ethnic group, this form of the language came to symbolize national unity against a backdrop of political upheaval throughout the twentieth century, and is now generally relied upon as the universal language in Indonesia.
