Don't be confused by the names the language is given, though - in Malaysia, for example, it is known as Bahasa Malaysia while in Singapore and Brunei it can be Malay or Bahasa Melayu. The reason for adopting these terms is political rather than a reflection of linguistic distinctiveness, and these are all in fact names for the same language, albeit with regional idiosyncracies. There are a few exceptional variants spoken, such as in the state of Kelantan or on Java, but Malay is largely a homogenous language.
