Chinese pianist Lang Lang, 24, is considered to be one of the most celebrated musicians of his generation. In October he will be releasing an album of piano solos, Chinese chamber and orchestral music entitled Dragon Songs. Recorded in China earlier this year, the album takes the listener on a musical journey that explores China's diverse musical culture. "I have come into the spotlight of the world stage because of my playing of Western classical music. I wish this album to be a small rocket, letting more and more people know about and enjoy Chinese music and furthermore, know more about China," said Lang Lang. Pieces from Dragon Songs include the magnificent Yellow River Concerto, the highly virtuosic piano concerto filled with colourful chords and scale passages. This is contrasted with miniature pieces for piano solo, and chamber music combining piano with traditional Chinese instruments such as the guzheng, pipa and guanzi. Although all the pieces were written in the early 20th century, most of them are based on much older sources. The result is a fusion of traditional Chinese melodies with Western classical music, producing a unique mystical sound without alienating those who may not enjoy traditional Chinese music.
