Asian Absolute Newsletter, Summer 2006

Ed joined Asian Absolute in 2005 as a project coordinator with the Japanese team in London. In March 2006, he was promoted to project manager.

During his first year at Asian Absolute, Ed has become a key member of the busy Japanese team, handling work for large accounts such as Sun Microsystems and MontBlanc, and supporting the account managers in their activities. On a day-to-day basis, Ed works closely with the production team in Beijing and has a strong understanding of DTP processes and applications as well as niche localisation tools. In his wide-ranging role, Ed also liaises regularly with Asian Absolute's translators in the UK, Japan and elsewhere around the world. He says that the job has given him a rare opportunity to work with such a diverse range of interesting people.

Ed is originally from Cheshire, where he spent his early years before moving further north to study Japanese at Leeds University. As well as becoming fluent in the language, Ed studied the economics, literature and international relations of Japan as part of his degree course. He spent one year in Osaka for his studies, before returning to the UK to complete his degree and begin an MA in Applied Translation Studies. As well as Japanese, Ed knows German and some Cantonese. Ed, born to Chinese parents, uses his given Chinese name, Wai-Ming, as a middle name, but also has a different Japanese name which he uses more commonly and which you might see on his Asian Absolute business card.

Ed is passionate about video games and manga, and has filled his spare time with these for several years. He hopes eventually to specialise in the translation of video games from Japanese to English, and has researched and written extensively in this area, looking particularly at the Final Fantasy and Breath of Fire series.
