Asian Absolute commissioned by MultiLingual ComputingMultiLingual Computing, a leading industry magazine for website globalisation, international software development and language technology, recently published an issue with a regional focus on Japan (issue 96). As a leader in the field of Japanese translation Asian Absolute was commissioned to write an article providing expert insight into the subtle differences involved in gender specific speech, and how they affect the process of localisation in Japanese. Asian Absolute's Rik Grant and Naomi Okada, both fluent in English and Japanese, pooled their knowledge of the subject to produce an article containing insights apparent to them as native speakers of English and Japanese respectively. As well as highlighting the differences the article discusses the potential pitfalls of working with media that features gender specific terms and syntax. The readership's interest in the subject reflects the growing attention paid to Asian languages within the localisation industry, and the gradual increase in client expectations for translation quality in these languages. Experienced buyers are now demanding that their vendors master more advanced linguistic challenges, such as interpretation of these subtle nuances evident in gender-specific speech. While low-cost translation remains attractive for many companies, those for whom translated text is high profile or mission-critical are increasingly looking for a polished translation with the complex messages of the original conveyed in a culturally and linguistically sensitive way.
